Sergio Gor visits Rohingya camp in Cox's Bazar

US Special Envoy for South and Central Asia Sergio Gor on Thursday visited the Rohingya camp in Ukhiya of Cox's Bazar, leading a 14-member high-level delegation.

The delegation visited Camp 4, Camp 4 Extension, Camp 8 West (8W), and Camp 6 in Ukhiya, where they spoke with Rohingya families, and gained firsthand insight into their living conditions.

According to the Office of the Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner (RRRC), the delegation arrived at Cox's Bazar Airport around 12:00pm and proceeded directly to the Rohingya camp in Ukhiya.

During the visit, the delegation sought detailed information about food assistance, healthcare services, children's education, the risks of fires and landslides, limited livelihood opportunities, and the overall humanitarian situation in the camps.

The visit of the Special Envoy brought renewed attention to the Rohingya refugees' long-standing aspiration to return to their homeland. As the delegation's motorcade entered the camp, hundreds of Rohingya men, women, and young people stood in lines holding up various placards that read,"You have your home! We miss our home!”,  "Safe repatriation is our right".

The entire demonstration was peaceful.

The Commissioner for Refugee Relief and Repatriation Mohammad Mizanur Rahman said the US Special Envoy thanked Bangladesh for providing shelter to the Rohingya refugees. 

“He personally observed the Rohingyas' living conditions and the humanitarian situation in the camps. He said the US will continue its humanitarian assistance for the Rohingya population”, he told Daily Waadaa.

US Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent T Christensen accompanied the delegation during the visit.

Sergio Gor arrived in Dhaka on Thursday. On that day, he held a meeting with Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman.

He is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Saturday.
